What is GIS? GIS is a method for analyzing, sharing and presenting data through a number of formats, including computer generated maps. GIS can display various natural and man-made physical features over a landscape in a series of layers for location analysis and use as a decision support and planning tool. Data which is depicted visually can help spot trends, highlight customer bases, manage projects, along with numerous other applications. GIS allows you to view, understand, question, interpret and visualize your data in ways simply not possible in the rows and columns of a spreadsheet. Government entities can utilize GIS to assist them with managing programs and services such as zoning, storm water runoff, parks and recreation, planning, public works and more. Through GIS, you can look at any individual parcel or large area of property in terms of physical location, geographic characteristics and all the information associated with it as it pertains to administration (tax, zoning, construction applications, pets, health and safety, public works, recreation program fees and more.) |
